As the Senior Audio Engineer at Concordia College (in Moorhead, MN) I had been predicting problems at events, but no one took me seriously. I had been reading trade magazine articles, for the past 7 or 8 years, about the pending FCC selling off our white space. Slowly, over time, several events began having wireless “drop‐outs” and some total failures. It kept getting worse, as no one wanted to use a corded microphone and they would insist on wireless use every day.
My assistant engineer, Mike Elstad, and I design, set up and operate over 600 live sound events each year. 90% of them require the use of wireless microphones. We have 40 UHF units in our inventory. There are cell towers on our library and theatre complexes and wireless data routers everywhere for our computer network. Add to that about 3,500 student and staff cell phones.
We worked at an event where all 14 wireless systems went down one night at a cabaret show with 3,000 people in the audience. The next day I stood up in the vice‐president’s office and said, “I warned you this was going to happen!” They looked at me and said, “just fix it, Maurice,” so I went on a quest for answers, did research and talked to factory reps to get to the bottom of it all.
I started seeing product ads for Kaltman Creations (www.RFanalyzers.com) and made a phone call. The guy on the other end of the phone was Mark Kaltman. How many times in this day and age do you get to talk to the right person who has the right answer the first call you make to a company? I was beyond pleased and ordered the Invisible Waves RF analyzer system that day.
I received the Invisible Waves system in two days and was running it that afternoon. It saved my job! I was able to tune my wireless systems between the interference on campus. This is an awesome solution to the nightmare of wireless microphones in my situation. Now I am better prepared to deal with multiple wireless mic systems at every event. I have far less stress in my life! Thank you Mark Kaltman!
